Wood Engraving Tools for Printmaking

Here are the tools I use for wood engraving printing. Please note these are wood engraving tools, not woodcut tools (for an detailed explanation see this article)

I use EC Lyons engraving burins. These are specifically designed for hard surfaces like dense end-grain wood and metal. They won’t have the same effect on a soft side grain wood or Lino.

My most used tools are the spitsticker, tint tool, and round scorper.

Here is a close up shot of a round scorper (left) and a spitsticker tool (right)

Another option is the engraving burins by Ian Corrigan and EC Muller. I haven’t tried these yet but have been wanting to for a while now.

Something helpful is that Chris Daunt has a great page on his website explaining all the different types of tools and what each is used for. This makes it slightly less overwhelming if you’re just starting out!

I’m not affiliated with any of the sites I linked. I just want to make it easy to find the products :)
